The status of water treatment and quality in the Member States of the World Health Organization was the subject of a questionnaire circulated in 1953. The replies clearly indicated the magnitude of the problem and the need for attention by the World Health Organization.

Klimaatrisico’s in Nederland

Dit PBL-rapport brengt belangrijke klimaatrisico’s in Nederland in beeld die optreden in het huidige klimaat. De in dit rapport in beeld gebrachte klimaatrisico’s maken duidelijk dat we voort moeten maken met het klimaatadaptatiebeleid.

Er zijn al klimaatrisico’s met grote impact die vragen om keuzes

Hitte en droogte hebben effect op de gezondheid, hebben onomkeerbare gevolgen voor nat archeologisch erfgoed, en leiden tot verlies van biodiversiteit. Daarnaast hebben extreme weersituaties regelmatig geleid tot lagere opbrengsten in de landbouw, en schade aan gebouwen en infrastructuur. In de recente perioden van droogte kwam de drinkwatervoorziening sterk onder druk te staan. Dit vraagt om het tijdig maken van keuzes: hoe willen we als maatschappij met deze risico’s omgaan?

Toekomstgericht klimaatadaptiebeleid vraagt om structurele keuzes

Het is urgent om te bedenken hoe we met de klimaatrisico’s willen omgaan. De ambitie is om voor 2030 ongeveer een miljoen woningen te bouwen: waar en hoe willen we bouwen, rekening houdend met overstromingen, wateroverlast en hitte? Hoe staat het met de inrichting van ons landelijk gebied?

De rijksoverheid werkt al met het principe ‘water en bodem sturend’. Hoe gaat ons watersysteem er uitzien, rekening houdend met waterverdeling, waterveiligheid en waterkwaliteit? Door klimaatadaptatie leidend en sturend te laten zijn voor het huidige beleid kunnen klimaatrisico’s worden verkleind.

Aanpassing aan klimaatverandering raakt veel beleidstrajecten en vraag om toekomstbestendige, structurele keuzes. Een klimaatbestendige samenleving richt zich daarom niet alleen op aanpassingen voor een enkel probleem, met technische oplossingen zoals dijkverhoging of beregening.

Het is aan te bevelen dat politiek en beleid zich richten op een maatschappij die veerkrachtig kan reageren op effecten van klimaatverandering, zowel in ruimtelijke inrichting als economische activiteiten en gedrag.

Kennis over risico’s nog niet compleet

Voor veel klimaatrisico’s is niet bekend welk deel van de maatschappelijke kosten, schade of maatschappelijke impact precies is toe te schrijven aan de klimaatverandering. Goede monitoring ontbreekt voor bijvoorbeeld natuurbranden of klimaatrisico’s voor cultureel erfgoed. De beschikbare kennis en informatie is echter wel helder over welke impact (mede) het gevolg is van klimaatverandering. Het is duidelijk dat toenemende klimaatverandering zal leiden tot grotere risico’s als Nederland zich niet weet aan te passen aan het veranderende klimaat.

Garden Cities of To-Morrow

Originally published in 1898 as To-Morrow: A Peaceful Path to Reform by Ebener Howard “the book”, writes F.J. Osborn “holds a unique place in town planning literature, is cited in all planning bibliographies, stands on the shelves of the more important libraries, and is alluded to in most books on planning; yet most of the popular writers on planning do not seem to have read it – or if they have read it, to remember what it says.”

The book gave rise to the garden city movement and is very important in the field of urban design. It aimed to propose an alternative to industrialised cities in the late 19th century. In what he calls town-country, it is a type of urban development somewhere between the city and the countryside. It would be the best of both worlds.

Biodiversity is Key

‘The forests have taught us that diversity is key and that abundance comes with the growth of different ways to interact with the environment and not limit or eliminate it.’ (Lombardi, 2021).

All organisms play a part in the functioning of the forest in the processes of building up and breaking down organic matter and recycling nutrients. Biodiversity is key.
