Since its creation, the European Union has been based on an ideal of solidarity, equal opportunities, and cohesion. This is why the Treaty of Rome (1957) aimed to “reduce the differences existing between the various regions and the backwardness of the less-favoured regions.”

Sinds haar oprichting is de Europese Unie gebaseerd op een ideaal van solidariteit, gelijke kansen en cohesie. Daarom had het Verdrag van Rome (1957) tot doel “de verschillen tussen de verschillende regio’s en de achterstand van de minder begunstigde regio’s te verkleinen”.
